Hey guys, the question popped up at work - which game had our favorite hand-painted textures. We started listing them, but think we're barely scratching the surface of the good stuff out there. Hopefully turning to PC we'll find some more to keep on the radar. Here's what we've got so far.
-Torchlight
-Wildstar
-Bastion
-Transistor
-Diablo3
-WoW
-Allods

Bravely Default
Darksiders 2 has some really great hand-painted stuff that's augmented by normal maps and shader work.
League of Legends has very nice texture work on some of the newer champions, along with the update they just did to their map.
pc
It seems to be used quite widely, seems to refer to games that either low poly paper where nothing seems solid and made of paper or games that what you fellows call "stylized"; however some of the games you mention had cell shade or specular so they wouldn't be hand painted.
This is most confusing indeed.
It means diffuse only and painted by hand (no photo sourcing.)
So that would mean that everything done from scratch is hand painted textures?
This is most perplexing development indeed.
There is no big rule or definition that I think everyone could agree on. There are definitely some games on the fringe of what some people would consider hand-painted and others wouldn't. I think Darksiders qualifies as Hand-painted, although with it's use of normal maps it would be ruled out based on TerraBite's definition a few posts above.
But predominately.. it refers to a game with a more painterly style, where many details and lighting come from a flat diffuse textures as opposed to a combo of several maps.
Lots of BitGem, gametextures.com and handpaintedtextures.com in the environment, could not have done it in 10 months without these amazing resources.

Cheers
I'm not exactly sure what their process was but I think it was a mixture of hand-painting, photosourcing/paint-overs, and normals from sculpts. What I do know is: damn, did they have a flair for style or what
I know, right? It looks amazing at 1920x1080, even though a lot of the art and icons were originally painted at super low res. Fantastic art direction and technical execution all around.

Only I who think it's funny that nowadays "hand painted" = "Fantasy MMORPG"?
There are endless directions you can go with painting textures by hand...
Yeah well 12 years ago nobody even used term hand painted since it was the default way to make textures.
Some photosourcing and automation was involved but texture artist by definiton was the dude who can paint like a boss.
But after the normal map revolution came those fantasy and cartoony games were the only ones where devs found it reasonable to ignore the technological arms race and continue using the oldschool texturing style.
Which is a shame.
@Blaisoid - Never thought of that. "12 years ago nobody even used term hand painted since it was the default way to make textures." Lol.
Stuff being made for WoW lately is pretty great. Keep the new stuff going! Also I love Ni no kuki. Their FX are really great, the world map is gorgeous.
@Walking Dead game - I don't mind them, I think it's a neat alternative to what you usually see. I think painting like that would be pretty awesome.
I know it's not game, but you can see it on the 3D models in this, it's pretty cool. https://vimeo.com/17914974
You can find the models here and examine their UV's and painted textures. Also, check out the hig-poly models polycount.
They've managed to make 3000's tri character more alive and dynamic than some mo-cap games make today with tentimes the polyocunt.

I think this thread is great opportunity for us to cite hand-paintend special effects!
You know like spells and such in MMO'S.

Just discovered Wakfu:
There's also Gigantic coming out soon:
Also, I bought a Nintendo DS just so I could play Bravely Default, love the painted bacgrounds!
Stylized hand painted is my favorite style to work with by far, I know I could just keep thinking of more games if I kept thinking.

Games-wise it's hard to find many examples of more illustrative art style, other than some of the awesome looking cel-shaded style games, like TF2, the recent Wind Waker remake, Skyward Sword:

And Tiny and Big tried something a little more illustrative too:

There's a lot of great looking NPR-style games coming up soon, though - like Rime:

This is a mega stretch, also many of these games have specular and normals thus they aren't hand painted.
Also there is a difference between hand painted because ps1 could only do so much and low poly paper of PC gaming.
Also what's the deal with the word "stylized" to describe a game? I rarely saw anything trying to be real when I was younger except for the tough guy games, and sports games. Looking at my collection throughout the years absolutely nothing is real; so what's the deal here?
I got a bunch of this dude's stuff from Pior (or from Dark Horizon, who got it from Pior). I dunno who he is but he's awesome and if anyone knows his work/real name please share!
Can never have too much of The Godfather
Also, Allods online :
