You have to have the lowpoly selected when you open the RTT and you want to bake from a highpoly to a lowpoly by the way.
Please say if I misunderstood something, but I don't see reason for baking from a lowpoly to a highpoly.
Because my low poly has a textured material on it, I forgot it made the high poly mesh harder to see. I guess it was cognitive dissonance that made me think something was wrong because I normally remove any material before rendering.
I tried it again and it's finally baking out normally again.
