Problem with cloth modifier collision

Hiya!
I started making a high poly sword which I will bake to a lower poly. I'm at the point of modeling the hilt and it's quite a daunting task to actually make it look good. Surfed in the internet and found the thread in quote. Tried using the very same approach and grouped the far end of the cloth plane to my cylinder, yet my problem is that the cloth is not actually colliding with the hilt object and actually wrapping into it. The cloth just flaps around wildly :C
For some reason the 3DSMax file attached in the post is not working for me so I can't really study from it.

Screens of my setup can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/jRSEa

Here we go:
1. As MrOneTwo wildly guessed , this was rendered inside 3dmax with vray
2. Yep, the etching was done with a 2D mask used as displacement
3. Nope, the leather has just a normal map applied on it
4. The leather grip was done with 3dsmax cloth, simulating a plane rolling onto the grip (I know, I'm a lazy bastard):
