Hey everyone!
So after Yorkshire Polycount meetup I thought I need to participate in the forums more. So here goes my first WIP thread.
Concept is from this guy:
http://karanak.deviantart.com/ Sorry, don't know his full name.
So far I've done most of the "body" of it. I still need model the other side as at the moment everything is perfectly symmetrical.
Some areas in the concept are either not finalised or they don't seam practical so I am trying to design them on my own.
So I thought that instead of that light/laser on top of grenade launcher I'd put extra magazine in cloth holster attached to velcro strip. So you could velcro different types of things if needed, like bandages, extra battery etc.
On the other side which is the main side (as viewed from players perspective) I put a military style light. I didn't really like the one on the concept as it looke odd with that button/light on the side. I modelled it quickly to have a look though:
Also I am stuck with the grenade launcher as it looks too plain and the concept is a bit too loose to follow ir properly. I'll have to think about detailing it, maybe adding some heat radiators or a grip.
I didn't really follow the concept for the scope area as I kind of liked the idea of the circular screen to show ammo or some other stats (maybe a radar?). I also think that the front scope guide is not needed, as you couldn't aim with it so I think to remove it.
Any comments and critique is welcome!

Grenade launcher has this outer guard/shell that cools it off and just looks a bit more logical and IMO nicer.
Modeled both sides of the weapon and the hinge/lock mechanism for folding the stock.
I also added a flashlight in front. Pro tip for users with english being their second language - don't google flEshlight.
Added a small detail on the magazine to help to remove it and some other random bits.
Need to clean the whole thing a bit. Starting to get a bit noisy.
Its a start for the cam that will go on the right hand side as in the concept. It will be tilted on the side and mounted on that rail.
Also in theory this baby should be driving the whole virtual scope.
If not this than its PFM technology.
Here is the finished camera
Now I need to figure out how to connect it to the gun and its almost done.!
Hope people like it. If there is anything you think is off feel free to comment!
Did you use only max or zbrush too?
Max for about 95% as I did two buttons (for that cam), that end of butt and some screws (not all) in Zbrush.
I think moving forward I want to incorporate Zbrush more and more. This was still fun doing it the "old" way.
Also here is a bit of the process I did to figure out what to do with that camera attachment and top part of the hinge.
I was looking for a way to get more function of that area so I put a socket with a small plastic lid/cap. But it looked cheap and I don't think it would be practical. Well less practical as it is now.
I think I need to illustrate some of the design decisions as I find it just posting progress pics is boring and its not always easy to translate concept to 3D. I'll put some images together when I get some time.
My wife got me a Quixel suite for Christmas (its 50% off today) and I plan to do a look dev soon, just before I do low poly.
Hope you like it!
But I can't bring myself for rerendering these again for hi-poly presentation.
Or maybe I can't read sarcasm on polycount
Yeah I was going to put it in using NDO but I might try zbrush first. Got to finish low poly and I am smoothing out some of the high poly at the moment.
Have to say thank you yo Earthquake and his guides and also this guide: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146667
Finally have solid workflow for baking normal maps and troubleshooting them. Also need to model for low poly next time.
Kind of went away from the reference colours, but I felt it looks better slightly darker.
I think at the time I thought it would look cool and unfortunately didn't really think about practical things.
