Ok, I will that method first once I get home tomorrow. Once I finish this and the little spring part I can take it into mudbox and sculpt the welded joints and also add in some damage to it
yes it works with aligned holes too, by the way for the welded joint I use this script http://jokermartini.com/welder/ its free, I use it all the time, make juste sure that your model is in a real size in max
Sculpting probably would look better, and the original rust weapons have sculpted wood. I am contemplating just sculpting the cloth in, it appears that is what they have done for their other weapons:
They have a similar gun in the game, I am going for something like this:
If I am going to be sculpting I am going to need to practice, my last few attempts have gone awfully.
I had a little practice with making the circles using Sebs idea. I still don't know how to make them connected over and over. However when I do find out, this design will work well. I will have to try and keep it all quads because I want to sculpt it.
You can just focus on making a simple plane, cutting out and welding out a hexagon shape, and then duplicating and snapping multiple clones of that against each other, merge vertices, and then do your morph(I'm assuming it's a morph).
Young, do you have a handle on how to make specific edits to a mesh in terms of adding vertices, cuts, etc? I feel like you might not have a complete handle on those tools if you're wondering how to make these explicit topology examples.
I know the basics of using cuts, swift loops etc. Sometimes I get stumped on making something, then I think about it and realize how easy it should have been. This will probably be one of those situations.
I haven't been modelling for very long, so I am still learning as I go. That's the reason I am trying to finish these projects.
I have kind of neglected this project, so I decided to get back into it. I duplicated the little hole I made, now I need to work out how to weld it all together and turn it into a cylinder.
Now I just have to deal with the little bolt section, which is going to be a pain to do. The actual spring and bolt should be incredibly simple, just getting the hole cut out is the more challenging bit.

I might just have to give this a go. It seems a lot easier than messing around in mudbox.
Unless you're on a production schedule, aim for quality.

you can snap on the grid or on the vertex/edge

I made this instead:
It worked pretty well with turbo smoothing.
Is it looking good? I don't see any triangles in there, so it should be good for sculpting.
The turbo smooth isn't on for some parts of the model.
