Hey everyone,
At the moment I am looking at Ancient Egyptian as part of my art coursework, and it made me wonder why I have never seen Ancient Egypt in a game environment.
Its such as an interesting time period, with great landscape such as the river Nile, the pyramids, the valley of the Kings etc. So many interesting pieces of culture.
Along with all the brightly colored architecture, interesting shapes and designs of temples. It would make for a fantastic game environment.
The Gods and mythology is also very interesting. The characters are quite diverse and have some interesting stories to them. I could imagine a game based around Egyptian mythology, the pyramids and burials.
Anyone else interested in this time period? I think its great.

I agree, it could definitely make a cool setting. But, I don't think it's been overlooked - Egyptian influenced gods and architecture are all over the place in dozens of games. And there are plenty of games that take you to a more modern day, ruined Egypt.
There's been a lot set in egypt, but they end to be more modern times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_games_set_in_Egypt
I think it just stems from the fact that period games overall are less common. (I say less, there are obvious exceptions, such as Assassin's creed for example.)

I think a Skyrim type game would work great in an Ancient Egyptian setting, it would be really cool.
It also might have to do with the fact that people normally think of vast deserts of nothingness when it comes to Ancient Egypt, which may or may not be the most exciting area of gameplay depending on how it's done.
IE super fun with things like sandstorms and the like, super-terribad-boring if you had to walk through nothing but a sand dune for 20 hours before reaching the next village.
+Possibly some technical challenges in creating realistic deserts other than a static environment. God I'd love it though if there was a game where the sand actually formed dunes that would grow and disappear, something akin to how nice the oceans were created in Black Flag.
This is all me just guessing by the way. I could easily just say most games take place in temperate climates because that's what the developers actually live in.
The characters of the universe are interesting, yes, but you have nothing that spawns works like The Ten Commandments or The Prince of Egypt. Nothing in terms of classical epics, poems, written work, etc.
This is contrast to Ancient Greece and Rome: Ulysses, Antigone, etc. All well remembered stories that have spawned MANY pieces of work.
There were obviously pyramids and burial places in the more sandy areas
Because 40 years of video games isn't a lot of time.
