Hey guys, first post on polycount after looking at a lot of people's great work
I'm Samuel Bang, a 2nd Year student at University of Hertfordshire studying Games Art, and I've recently started a tribute to Blade Runner by doing the interview scene (in which the lighting is fantastic
)
Reference:
So far, I've been able to block out the scene, produce a basic floor with pillars, and set up the initial lighting. My goal is to get the level to a standard worthy of the original film
Here's a screenie:
I think the main problem at this stage is getting believable reflections on the floor, because at long distances the screen-space reflections fade out and the lighting clips through geometry. Yet when I increase the screen-space quality, the clipping gets worse? Ill play around a bit more.
Any feedback is very welcomed, its good to see so many talented artists on here

My main issue is the plant, it is double sided so the lighting is affecting it strangely. Also the table feels too plain in comparison to the marble surfaces. What do you guys think? Any crit greatly appreciated.
I fixed a few of the assets are re-did the lighting, hopefully looking better now. I cant seem to get the sharp shadow on the left to soften out without losing the shadows coming from the blinds, ill try to look into that more.
Area lights cast softer shadows on objects they are close to and sharper shadows on objects farther away. For your blinds and lamp that is the opposite of what you want. The factor I don't know how to replicate in game lighting is directionality (how organized the light rays are in their direction of travel) which has a big impact on shadow falloff at different distances and specular reflections.
Also consider they could be using multiple lights or that the shadows you attributed to the blinds might be something else positioned in front of a light.
I'd definitely recommend if you haven't yet, I watched it last week and it's quite interesting. However, this particular room isn't really looked at for more than a couple of minutes.
They show a few photos of the set, they're probably floating around the internet.
