[Riot Art Contest] Feral Voilbear

Hey guys, I'm new to polycount, but excited to be here and for the Riot Art Contest. Hopefully I don't screw up my WIP thread!

After playing around with some of the champions I like, I finally settled on Volibear, because he's awesome. Also, one of my favourite Warwick skins is the Feral WW skin, and I've always wanted a Feral version of Volibear, because what's cooler than a rampaging thunder bear? Here's some WIP love, I'll try to explain my thought process a bit as well.



The first image is me starting out with no concrete plan, just sketching out some bear, some armor, and getting to work on an angry looking bear head.

In the second image I'm desperately trying to find a cool pose for said bear, at the same time I start toying with a Gladiator Volibear idea.

I couldn't really find a pose I liked so I just started building up the head/face/roar portion. It's somewhere around this point that I realized I wanted to go for a more hulking-brute type look rather than an agile warrior type pose. The second image is trying a different pose and playing around with Gladiator Volibear a bit more. GG attention span.

I hope I"m doing this right.

Here I just start fleshing out the bulky giant upright bear body. I decide to go for an 'escaped feral bear being hunted down' idea. There's some tranquilizer darts in his shoulder from his pursuers. Mean.

At this point I realize I don't like the initial head I painted, so back to the drawing board, um, tablet. Redid the head, going for a more menacing roar type deal. The idea is finally coming together. Going for an 'angry roar as he turns from being hit with the tranqs.' Not sure yet who is chasing him, but I put some green goo in the darts, so it's looking like the Noxians might have some beef.

And this is as far as I've gotten. Changed up the left arm a bit because I wasn't digging it. Started work on a collar/muzzle that he may have been imprisoned in, also added some quick lightning effects just to get an idea of how it would look once my bear is electrified!


I fully realize how backwards my process seems so far, but if I can't come up with a sketch/pose/scene I like, I usually start scribbling until I find something I do like, and then I tend to get carried away. Been working at this for a couple days now between projects, going to add the background next.


Also, do we just post our final image in the thread? Or will we have to upload it somewhere separately? I could not find this in the contest description. Thanks all. Go easy on me!
