Original Post:
Entering the final stages on this environment in UE4. This has been my first attempt at creating a large natural environment. Most of my older works were interiors or city environments, so overall I'm pretty happy with how my foliage work came out especially. Sti planning on adding in a few elements like a small shed next to the lighthouse, but I went ahead recently and took some high res shots of the whole scene in its current state.
Planning on doing a proper video of the scene when it's totally complete for my reel. And yeah djoexe, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter actually ended up inspiring the visuals here a lot. I loved what they did with rocks and foliage specifically in that game.
Yea the foliage is nice. Did you have to do any custom shader stuff for the foliage, or did it just work by default?
The foliage shading was something that ended up being a real annoyance actually. UE4 doesn't currently have a good way of doing back face shading without flipping the vertex normals automatically for the back face. I ended up having to brute force the problem and use duplicates of the foliage geometry for the back faces just to get the shading to work. I really do hope they eventually add a good foliage shading model as a default option. I find it kind of weird that one isn't there already.

That sucks, UDK had the same problem. I am sure the custom back lit material you can find on the internet for UDK would work the same in UE4.
Mind doing a breakdown of your foilage materials, lighting and atmosphere setup?
I think I'll do some detailed breakdowns when I'm totally done with the scene. As of now I'm still working on this scene for a class, under deadlines, so my time to put stuff like that together is limited.
Been working on some more minor props for the scene. Again, thanks to everyone for all the positive feedback. I plan on posting some more updated full images tomorrow, better showing off my recent work, but for tonight, here's this one:
Really loving it, that first shot is really fantastic! Same with that last one you posted, lanterns are awesome
I think the only thing that maybe could use some adjustments thus far are your pine trees, maybe an edit in the texture could help a little bit but they feel a little lacking in density, could probably use a bit more branches I think Might also be a cool idea to add a bit more red to the lighthouse stripes, as right now its a bit brown and doesn't offer as much contrast (at least looking from in the first shot for example).
Overall looks like a great scene so far, keep up the awesome work.
Getting closer to being totally done with the scene. The shed next to the lighthouse is complete and I've added in some more small props. Still tweaking bits of lighting/coloring/shot framing to suit the scene as it evolves.
For some reason I can't see your latest update. Perhaps something is wrong with the image host at the moment. Anyway, from the looks of your earlier images, this is turning out pretty damn awesome! Very well done. Nice rocks and trees. Looking forward to seeing your latest update once those images pop in, hehe.

I think I used a weird version of the image URL on that last update. I changed it back to the version I used on the first set of images.
Same here, can see the original post images, but not the new ones.
I really like the scene and you've done a great job on the composition of your images. I do think the trees look a little thin on foliage perhaps.
Edit: I think the trees look good in all the images except the last one, that's the one that makes them look that way.
Working on a system in UE4 to render quick HDR beauty shots of models kind of like Marmoset. Testing that system out, here are some images of the beetle I made for this scene:

I love that idea... Any thoughts on making that available? Put it up on the UE4 market place for a few bucks and I'd buy it.
Your trees seem odd. They look pretty pencily and could be beefed up in terms of fuller branches with leaves. Is it a pine tree?
I get that they are thin being close to the water but they are the same consistent thinness even deep into the forest. The lack of variation (they all have that same "pointy spear" shape), the odd sharpness of the tops, just throws off a very well crafted scene. I mean, even the grass is high quality! Trees could use the same love.

It's really not enough to even offer to sell. Just a scene I can use to take quick shots with a custom background color and HDR lighting. If I wanted to make it a presentable tool, I'd have to make it a lot more automated.
Awesome composition, but my only crit would be that the car is a bit too punchy in your screenshot, wich is distracting from the main focus point. I would maybe tone down the saturation of it and it would be enough to make the whole picture more uniform.

Went ahead and rehosted on imgur.

Love the last screenshot between the trees
(No issues with broken links for me)
A couple of new shots showcasing it:

Thanks!
I'll be doing some simple breakdowns of my foliage workflow as well as how I worked around some of UE4's limitations there.
