Achieving cartoon style in 3D

Hey there,

I was watching some gameplay footage from the game "The Legend of Korra" and was really curious about the art style and how they achieved it.

Does any of you know the general idea behind this art style? I do see some line definition like you would do in 2D art and some intentional lack of detail, but is there someone here that worked on a project like this and knows what are the "core principles" and mindset to achieve this style?
