Hi there fellow reader!
For my first thread ever, I decided to show off some WIP of a gun I'm modeling for a School game project and post updates as it's development goes further.
If you guys are interested, I could also post a few details on how I proceed (not that I'm master of modeling, besides this is my first try on hard surface with Maya ^^".)
Useful critics and feedback are welcome
18/10/14 : Worked on the cylinder. Only the main frame still remains. I'm thinking about adding the screws and other secondary details, also have to make the barrel and the trigger
PS : Sorry about the bad render, I had to use Zbrush's smoothing algorithm instead of Maya's, which somehow successfully made my PC crash.
High Poly :
Low Poly with supporting edges :
Thank you for reading !

One thing I'd say is that the inside of the barrel looks a little narrow compared to its exterior (I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with the terminology). I'd expect a gun with those proportions to be firing much larger rounds.
^ I agree with desktoppirate too, soften some of those edges because it's a bit too angular at the moment.
Nice work though, it's a great start.
Yes I'm going to bake the high poly onto a low. Why would you soften the edges ? is it an aesthetic reason ? Or something more practical ?
He he yes, I've came to that conclusion too as I was nearly finished with the cylinder. The biggest issue with it was that it had 8 rounds, which makes the amunations small. Secondly, the bullets alignment is pretty strange, so I came up with a funny idea (which may sound crazy) : The gun fires two bullets at a time, so it's a two barrels weapon . Somehow that silly idea works, because that model will be used for a Beat'em all type of game.
Here's a few pictures of the high poly after today's work. What do you think about it ? Shall I proceed to the low poly ?
(don't mind the smoothing errors once again, I'll try to fix that ><)
Thank you for reading !
That's an interesting idea (the 2 bullets at once), but make sure the rest of the gun conforms to that idea. Is the hammer wide enough to accommodate both bullets (again, not too confident on 'gun anatomy') because it looks like it'd strike between the two. I think the main issue with having 2 small barrels is that the front of the gun looks a bit plain - like there should be something else going on on the flat end.
The designs really nice though. Nice and beefy - definitely my type of weapon! It sort of reminds me of the Hand Cannon from Destiny (perhaps that could provide a few ideas?).
I think there's a couple of things still to do, but it's coming along very nicely.
Additionally, the stanag/mounting grooves up front are incomplete. Might wanna check a Desert Eagle or something similar to see how integrated mounting is shaped.
And here's the front silhouette of the rail bits to help clarify
@WesleyArthur : I've dropped back to the one barrel type because the guy responsible for the initial concept didn't want two of them.
@AsaNYC : I gave a try to the accessory rail, and it rocked as hell, sadly, the same guy wasn't enthusiast about it either >< (that's a school project thingy by the way).
Anyways, I've spent lots and lots of time on that low poly bake, and thanks to the guys on the hangout I managed to have quite a clean bake.
So here is my first shot of the textured version C&C are appreciated as always
Thank you for reading me !
PS: I've made the screws and insets with nDo2, then the rest of the texture on Substance Painter, I have the feeling that the last one is writing a normal on Y-, since the scratch look oddly outward, but maybe it's just me, couldn't confirm that hypothesis on the web .
