I'd take another look at the limbs, the reference has a much more obvious bend in them while yours has less. In archery it's important that your bows limbs bend properly to give you a proper brace height and so it actually shoots properly.

the bottom doesn't line up because my mesh is symmetry-ed and the actual bow is not symmetrical, I imagine because it's handmade and not machine milled.

I dont know anything about bows, so why have you flattened the outer most curves on the bow on the right side?
the ends flatten out because that's how it's constructed it's better for stringing it.
