[Riot Art Contest] - Bladecraft Orianna

Hello all I'm fairly new to the polycount forum but I figure this be a good way to really get myself out there and known. I'm aspiring to win one of those prizes but really even if I don't it's still a victory. I'll be doing my best and updating this frequently in the coming two months.

I'll be doing a rework of Bladecraft Orianna who is my favorite champion. I'll work with a few ideas for composition and hopefully take off on one that really tells her story.

After finishing a commission for a friend I finally got a small chance to sit down and refresh myself on Ori's lore. I drew up some very quick thumbs to start getting the bad ideas out of my head and working towards the one I know I'll refine more. I also took a couple minutes to better understand what's on her body.

:icon_exclaim: It's gonna be a long road over the next couple months but I'm gonna challenge myself and aim for a top three place. Weather or not I get it, it's still a victory for me.

Heyo everyone another update here. I took a break over the weekend but now it's time to grind out some more ideas. This is the rough initial stages and I know it isn't very pretty like a lot of these other threads roaming around. However, this is only the beginning! I've started working with poses (alot have been scrapped before I even really began) but I've wanted to work out some of the bad ideas and find that good one that I know is in there. I think I have an idea of what I want to do and the color scheme in mind. I'll be making a detailed couple of sketches soon to better refine this idea I have in my head.

I'll be looking forward to competing with some of these other juggernauts in here!

Planning phase over. Now I can actually begin to flesh out something more eye catching. I've worked more with the idea I've had in mind here and just wanted to experiment with composition but I found that one of the original ones I had prior was a better fit for what's to come. Look forward to something that you might actually enjoy!

Here again with another update!

Worked more on the idea I had in mind to get a base ready to paintover. It's not exactly the composition I want but it's got the main points that I'll be fixing up. Now I can move onto digital painting and flex those art muscles!

I've been busy with other things as well as the holidays but this month is grind fest 2014. With the first digital update I did a very sketchy lay in for the composition. There is still a lot to fix and tomorrow I'm going to try to finish the clean line work to get ready and paint on.

Here's a bit more refined version of what I've been working on. There's still a lot more meticulous once overs I need to sort out over the coming days but I'm trying to decide weather or not I enjoy having the shield in the picture. It will be mostly transparent but I'm unsure if it clutters too much. Always open to any feedback and critiques!

Here's today's work. I messed around with the tower in different ways and I wanted to stay true to the purple inhibitor turret as much as possible, but I did also do my own take on it in some ways.

Tomorrow hopefully I can finish the rest of the linework it shouldn't be as bad as the other major parts. Then on to painting!

Monday's work. The lineworks almost done enough to start painting and that will be lots of fun. Just need to flesh out the explosion and foreground a bit more.

Been a bit since the last update but it was because I had trouble nailing this explosion. So I took some extra time over the weekend to flesh it out and fill in those lines. Here's what I got now just need to finish designing the shield and then paint!

Finished the linework finally and it's ready to paint. It looks chaotic right now and too clustered especially near the right leg. However, when it is painted it will show through better since the shield will be transparent.

Nice! Very dynamic ^^ I like the idea of a picture of Orianna in battle with explosions! I've only seen the cold and calculating interpretation of her in pictures, which tend to be very calm I'm looking forward to seeing the colors! ^^

Heyo thanks a lot! I agree I've only ever really seen her in pose shots. Here's hoping it turns into something great!

After a good long Thanksgiving break it's back to the grind and here we are with a base coat for general tones.

This isn't meant to look beautiful of course it's meant to serve as the base for me to add and refine over so that base color can show through in some areas.

I'm still on track to be done possibly this week. Here's hoping!

Started to add a bit more color and block in some basic areas of light and shadow. After that I had begun working on the skirt and blades surrounding the skirt. Just to get it a bit more rendered out. Hopefully tomorrow I will have more to show.

ooh nice! I like it! You might wanna make the rocks in the foreground a bit darker in value to add more depth ^^ other than that I really like the shading on her skirt, and I can imagine some really cool sparkly effects from her shield!

Yep! I still have to mess with the lighting a bit. I appreciate the input I'll be makin those rocks darker and seein how it turns out.

Took a while to really get her to stand on her own without the lines. I didn't think it would take as long as it would but I still am an amateur so I gotta work a little bit longer! I've no choice but to finish this on time so I'll put as much into it as I need to.

Laid in some base tones to work off of so that everything can stand on its own without the lines. Next I get to really render everything out and add the finer details to make it pop. Here comes the fun part!

Starting to dig into the ball and orianna and flesh the two out. I've added some smaller details and pushed opaque colors to solidify the forms. It's starting to turn out!

I've started to carve out the face. I don't know how I really feel about it. It conveys the way I wanted it to which fits her character: She's trying to have fun and show it but it manages to come off eerie and unnatural. I think I nailed that just fine but it still seems a bit off to me. For now I'll move on but I may revisit that face.

Took today to start working on the wall and the turret. The wall is very dissatisfying so I will be redoing it but I feel the turret came out pretty well for a base. I'll be adding details and refining it within this week which I hope to finish up. Almost there!
