I'm modeling a rifle without design at all. Just making up my mind as I go. I'm not sure about the overall shape, details nor topology but it's a lot of fun. Feel free to comment what do you think
The current model looks flat along the side, there are details but nothing really changing the silloette perpendicular to the side of the gun. The silloette from the side on looks ok. I would focus on making sure the pieces look as if they were from the same gun asthetically. The most intresting part of the model to me is the grip atm because of the nice curvy shapes.
I did that often some years ago and I could have been a lot further in modeling
if I didnt do that
You learn way more if you have to follow something, else you will avoid all challenge and just model what is convenient. Also your own designs will not be good unless you have great (concept/ID) art skills, and thus devalue your work even if executed perfectly in 3D.
Also you start with the details without doing a blockout first. There are already big issues with proportions, Id really follow a existing concept, or much better, a real gun, but its your time man, do as you think : P
form follows function - thats the key for great plausible design
