Insert Mesh Brushes On High Or Low Poly?

This might be a silly question but I'm new to this. In Zbrush I have a low-poly model of a bag with a belt-strap and I was inserting a buckle on the high-poly version of it. Am I doing this correctly to then bake the details onto the low with a normal map (there are a few other details in the high, like making the bag more smooth and crumpled) or should I use the insert mesh on the low-poly so there is an actual buckle there? :\

I've never used insert meshes on low-poly before so I don't know if that's generally done at all just to get some quick mini-models added to the overall model.

Mainly you'll only need the geometry put into the lowpoly model if you want its silhouette to change.

Otherwise if you're baking the maps externally then only the highpoly will need the detail.

If you're baking in zbrush you'll get the detail onto the low poly after subdividing and projecting

Thanks! yeah, since the buckle is going around the strap that's just hanging, i think I'll put it on the low-poly.
