Max or Maya(Shader wise)

Hello guys, so I was using marmoset toolbag to do realtime renders but now the trial time is over.
I want to ask what is better to do, download Maya or try the max 2015, I was using 3DS all the time but I don't mind learning Maya if it's better on the long run. Thanks all =p

I'd suggest Unity (+plugins), CE3 or UE4 for realtime, actually. Much more impressive to show you can work in-engine for realtime stuff.

Alternatively, Max has a pretty good PBR viewport shader available last I checked, so if you're already familiar you might be able to just DL that and use Viewport screens.

But yeah, in-engine still seems like the better option.

maya's viewport is way more powerful than max's. if you want to do realtime work in dcc definitely maya.

dont waste your time with glitchy half game, half movie CG, half outdated practices, shaders you have to set up yourselves and just get UE4 or Unity with shader forge or similar and experiment there, thats knowledge thats worth a lot in the long run, if you dont want to dig into these things (node based shaders) just buy a toolbag copy, but save the headaches and confusion from mixed practices, that are the modeling tools in that regard.

Also if you read about things on the internet about max or maya, you will get info from a Arch Viz guy there, and a VFX guy telling you something different, and a movie guy doing some strange stuff that does not relate either. If you work in a game engine, you can be sure everyone is talking about the same thing and you are up to common standards.

Hmm interesting, Unity free version let me do some good node based shaders?(with practice of course)

Well... Not the current free Unity out of the bag. Thus the "+ Plugins". There's a few node-based shader editors.
A popular and very good one is Shader Forge, coming in at $80 (works with free), but if you search around on the store there are cheap or even free alternatives... Just don't expect them to stand up quite as well for advanced functions.

Honestly, though, I think that's a good deal. If you absolutely cannot drop $80, then you can get Unreal 4 for $20 a month, too (which you can cancel at any time and still keep the core functions for).

Anyone knows some good free shaders(I know they won't be pr0 level)?I just want it to study because I don't have the money right now to buy marmoset or Shader forge.

as someone who used max for years and still does very often I have to say Maya.

its viewport is just so superior when it comes to high quality rendering.

Hmm pretty nice responses, I'll learn Maya then and get Shader Forge or Marmoset ASAP :P
