Checking my favourites on Artstation reveals quite a few skilled peeps, I've a bunch who are just general awesome illustrators, half the 'Legend of The Cryptids' Illustrators are female. But sticking to games:
oh hey everybody. Long time reader, first time poster. thanks JasonLavoie or putting my Firewatch screen on this thread. I figured I should say hi. Yes currently I'm the only environment artist on Firewatch.
This thread is humbling, because there are so many works here that I just assumed were made by dudes. And that makes me feel like a tool.
So realizing that there is are a lot more ladies in the industry than I initially thought, I couldn't be happier to be wrong. I'm amazed at the shear creative force you gals bring to the table, and I hope that as you are visible to the public you'll turn some heads and inspire more to tread in your footsteps.
I don't mean to start a conversation on this, just wanted to put that out there. Keep on kicking some serious tuffet, gals.
I didn't dig deep, but her latest images I googled, dated back to 2006.
there has been quite a bit of drama back then, because she photobashed a lot and told people its all painted, the witchhunt started when some dude showed that she even painted over photos in one of her painting tutorials. Pretty sad overall, she is a great artist even with photobashing you have to reach that level she is on.
I just want to say though, in light of all the calls for "more role models for girls"...
I'm also female, and when I started doing 3d art around seven years ago, many of these women either weren't around or weren't as well-known as they are now. My earliest inspiration came from guys like Pior and BoBo and Ben Regimbal. Poopinmymouth probably influenced me more than anyone else in those days, and all of them still do. Now, as evidenced by this thread, there are obviously, OBVIOUSLY many wonderful female artists for women to look up to, but seriously, if you're reading this thread and you're interested in game art at all, DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE SOMEONE LIKE YOU DO IT FIRST.
I'm not just talking about women, this is true no matter who you are or where you're from. It's true no matter your nationality, orientation, gender, religion, race, whatever.
Super inspiring (and sometimes jealousy-inducing!) thread! I recently discovered Lois Van Baarle aka loish. Not sure if she's ever worked in games--she mostly does illustration and animation so hopefully this isn't too far off the intent of this thread, but her stuff is awesome enough I wanted to post some. She's got tons of great art so I'm just picking a few at random to link to. She's also nice about giving back to the community--she's released some of her custom photoshop brushes, and has a long FAQ on her website including info on her process, resources, etc.
That's the great thing about art, you can express yourself and your art tothe best of your ability and post it online. People don't know if you are a male or female, but they can enjoy your work regardless!
When I started doing my dota2 art I never corrected people if they said I was male or female. I streamed with no cam and still built a following for my art. There were some People who did figure out I was female, and used it as an excuse as to why I was so popular, but I knew it was rubbish as I never used my gender to promote my art early on.
I'm happy we can make art and do the things we love to do cause we enjoy it, and we can do them through avenus like the steam workshop and the internet. Forums like this dont care who you are, as long as you are passionate about art and games, you're one of us!
Also I'd like to show off Yi's art! Very talented artist in Seattle!
I'm sure there's more ladies in games to mention, but I'm bad with names. Maybe some more tech artists and animators? Also, we're only touching games. Should we move into illustrators and visdev/concept artists for film and animation? I'd like to drop a few of them in here.
this tread is sure full of badassery , bt i dont realy get the point,
despite the danger of being the douche again
but this sounds to me like a "look women can do art too" tread, which in itself is somewhat sexist, since the shell your mind is jammed into doesnt really matter for doing art
