Hey, I modeled a gun exactly like this. It's the Beretta right?
My advice is, be careful not to make it too "boxy". Remember, a gun has hidden crevices and ounces of roundness to it from the sides. Don't just model from the side view but also consider the front,top, bottom and 3/4th as well.
Also you may want to consider creating a plane and setting a side-view of the weapon as the texture, then modelling it to match the picture. This helps to get the proportions and silhouette right. (forgive me if you are already doing this but I can't tell from the pics)
