How to model this shape in Maya?

Hi folks.
Please help me out, this one is really making my brain 'splode. I'm trying to model this corbel:

I've had some fairly disastrous attempts:

I'm struggling to get the "swirl" down, and to make all the different "layers" match the ref. Any advice on how to model shapes like this? It will eventually be used on this door:

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I literally asked this same question earlier lol. Here is a link to the thread I made: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140470

We mention Maya in it and I think I found a way to do it in Max using splines. Not quite perfect but I think its a step forward. I think in your case it seems you may have trouble having it all be a single mesh. Though looking at what you have, you might be able to make that object with 2 separate meshes.

sidx30, thanks! I saw your post yesterday, but it's a little different to the problem I'm having. I can make the swirl itself easy enough, it's the gradual stepping that is throwing me.I'm going to try and build the curves first using splines, then extrude. Hopefully I'll have better luck.
