just occurred to me that I have been doing 3d for 19 years now, jeez I
surprised that I am not pig sick of it. I even did 2d work for 7 years before that.
I mean, I spent about 4 years working 12 to 14 hours a day before I even got a sniff of a job in 3d.
TBH there are days when I can't even pick up my stylus, but lately I have been feeling quite inspired.
I am starting to think the reason I enjoy it is the problem solving side of it, ie figuring out how to do stuff, not that producing nice looking artwork is not rewarding in itself but ....
I think if I had been maybe 40 percent more technically minded I would have done really well for myself:)
I really think that games is very tech oriented now and that the ideal artist would be someone who could program shaders and script also.
It would be good to think I could be still working in 3d in 20 years time aged 66 lol

yeah one of my tutors at Middlesex uni who freelanced for a very long time ,one day just said 'fuck it' I am finished with art and went off and did wildlife management - said that he had done everything he had wanted to do in art, but I doubt I will go that way.
I think it's good to look at your long term future though, as you won't be young for ever and maybe you can't work in games forever.
I hope you get to work till retirement. If you will be a grandfather, your grandkids will be so proud of their hip grandpa, haha.
I can relate to this.
There have been times where I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a solution
Whether it's workflow or melscripting. The harder & longer it takes to solve, usually the
more rewarding feeling- Instant euphoria
Conquering the greater Mountain , and all that...
franky, yeah it would be great to be still working as an old geezer lol
Sometimes age discrimination kicks in here and there. Just have to beat it back with a stick, show them I still have that eagerness, that passion to do the best.
Kudos to you Mike for sticking with it!
I work with an artist that's 60 years old who doesn't plan on retiring for another ten. He's a 2D artist but still doing his thing in the CG/digital world, never had the desire to be an art director/manager, just loves his craft.
Eric, good on you, been at it longer than me, long may it continue.
It's odd though I don't intend to wind down , aged 46 - if anything I am trying harder, just don't have as much free time as i used to.
I never thought it was actually possible to do 3D for so long. I thought that at one point, the market would simply lookd down on you.
I guess you just have to be up to date with the technology and all that..
Gratz btw
I still focus mainly on zbrushing and photoshop
cheers Chimp, i think i will be around for a while , as long as I stay healthy
bellsey, good on you too, I was actually just plain shocked to realize it had been that long - wasn't really celebrating being around for so long and not achieving as much as I wanted:/
