Paul Rooney, Lana's agent, believes she might be the greatest artist alive working today: "When she describes what you can't see, you begin to realize why one of her invisible works can fetch upwards of a million dollars." said Rooney.



Thoughts?

the bitterness of the people talking about how she should pay her rent with their invisible money shows how materialistic our society is. Instead of talking about the philosophy behind the specific thought process of a new beginning, or a writers block, or anything related to what the artist is doing...people judge and paint themselves dark cynics.

Haha, is this a joke? Art is in part about imagination, the difference is all of the artists who make actual work with some manner of purpose ALSO have put hours of work, thought, and imagination into their pieces. They just have actual pieces at the end on top of it. All actual artists do what she does, and then do more.

Additionally, to me you cannot claim to be an artist if the work you produce cannot show clear, measurable results or growth. Nobody can study what you haven't created, they can only study how foolish people are to actually pay money for nothing (or, arguably, paying money for the experience of being able to say you paid money for art that doesn't exist).

I wonder, if someone were to buy one of her works and then claim it was never delivered, would they get to keep the piece and get their money back?

Well, the topic of what is considered art is age old and still a very valid thing to discuss. So wether or not the article is satire is irrelevant in the end.

I'm of the opinion that art can be art no matter what; if someone considers it art, it's art. And I'll accept that it's art. Whether I like it or not is another discussion.

If anybody says "this isn't art" about anything, they're missing the point of art.

The ultra rich collect art as a means to expand their wealth. Art rarely devalues, is considerably more stable than the stock market, and its appreciation can't be taxed because it's entirely speculative and depends on who's buying it.

That's what Lana and her agent are selling and this is largely how the fine art world works. It's very silly and, were the middle class to try this, could be VERY dangerous to the economy.

The only thing that really bothers me is that non-art people see this and associate it with what we do.

Someone should walk in and go, "ALL OF THE WORK IS MISSING!!!". Lana's agent would have to cancel any sales from the show and Lana would have to create new invisible works, unless the originals could be found. The gallery would then want to re-evaluate its security.

The closest thing I've seen to this is a painter who uses white paint on white paper, in the right light you might get a hint of the brush strokes. There wasn't enough paint being used to show much texture.

I absolutely love this - and would love it even if it was a real thing, and not just an hilarious viral stunt. It is a very clever commentary on how vapid the art world can be. Perfect !

Besides, it's really fascinating how a lot of people get all angry about stuff that other people do. Don't like shitty/pretentious art ? No need to rant about it, just go and make something better ! If it is good, it will find an audience.

Now of course art theft/plagiarism is a different thing altogether, and well worth pointing out.
