postpro on game models

hi there i am a Belgian digital arts and entertainment student and i'm now in my final year. For the moment i am getting my portfolio ready to start looking for an internship but recently i had a discussion with a friend about doing post production on game models.

Meaning doing stuff like overlays and rendering in passes with a game model, so in a way doing what you would would do with a model for an animation for example.

I don't want to do this since it feels like cheating if you are going for a real time 3d artist. So i'm kind of curious how you guys feel about this.

Thanks for your time
cheers

You mean like photoshopping the final render?
I don't know how the industry as a whole views that, but I absolutely HATE it. For a portfolio in particular, it seems like an extremely bad idea.

most art leads can spot "bullshots" pretty easily and will straight up pass on a portfolio that has them.

Yeah just don't do it. The art should be good enough without any post-pro, if it isn't then work harder on the art itself instead of wasting time on post-work.

Gotta agree with Xoliul. If your model can't stand up to scrutiny without hiding stuff in Photoshop, then the model needs more work.

Keep in mind, though, that this DOES NOT mean you should always avoid things like bloom or grain if they're part of whatever you're using to render. There's a difference between presenting your work in the best possible way, and trying to hide errors through post effects.

I think post is a very important part of a beauty shot, and creating a good presentation takes skill as well, just right amount of contrast etc, good amount of sharpening to fit most monitors. With that said don't go all crazy and paint in stuff that wasn't there that's just cheating,
