Surface shrinkage/self-impingement when rotating joint

Hey all. I want to use a 3D character as an underlay for one of my art pieces, but I'm running into this issue;

Not even sure what to call it. I created a base mesh in Makehuman, imported it into modo, then did a rigid bind. I figured all I need is a rough bind and then I'll pose the person and massage it later. Unfortunately this issue is cropping up and I'm not sure where to start looking for solutions other than to straight up ask someone - so I would be thankful for any help provided!
