I have never done any scifi work before. I found an amazing gun concept online. So I decided to go for it. I also have been told that I need to leave crazy bump alone and sculpt my normal maps! This is my first project with Zbrush. I am loving it! Anyway Here are some images. Any critiques would be appreciated.
Could you share the concept as well?
The angle of the grip doesn't look very comfortable. For a scifi gun I'd also expect the shape of the grip to be a bit more "moulded" , like this. That;s just personal preference though.
It looks like your edges are a bit tight, mind showing the high poly?
The thing that's really keeping it from shining right now(heh) are the materials. They're not PBR compatible.
I'm also not sure what the orange material is supposed to be? If you're going for a gold/brass material you need colour in your spec. Or use a metalness map.
And a minor thing, You could probably use some gradients for the emissive map instead of a solid colour. IMO anyway.
One of the thing I would work a bit more is about the material, it's a bit hard to find if the gun is made out of metal or plastic. I would suggest to take a look at theses tutorials:
that high poly looks like a noisy mess, almost like its made of stone, and it doesnt really do justice to the low res since everything is all warbled and just, not hard surface looking. i saw jon rush gave a lesson on this asset a while back. his was done in zbrush as well but the edge chipping and overall surface detail is kept to a minimum. itd definitely be to your benefit to go back on that high poly and polish out some of those major shapes.
Yea i agree that your highres is just too wobbly and looks like its made of clay literally. The low poly is a little better because the resolution probably hides a lot of the wobbles but the materials just don't pop at all. Start cranking the metallic areas...
