I make my first post a bit late but started the actual work on the contest one week ago. My intend is to do a Mason Archer Set as a sort of tribute to all the good archers that own me in Chivalry with my knight.
I`m gonna paste the references i used for inspiration and the actual concept i did.
And the helmet concept :
I also started a very rough idea for the long bow, but i`m gonna get back to the concept if i have time left later on :
These days i`m gonna post some high poly work in progress which i`m currently working on.
I like the bow. Something to keep in mind I see going around a lot at the moment is to keep the weapons and stuff more team neutral. I saw in the questions section a conversation about this where you can use some darker colors and stuff for the Mason side but both teams will be able to use the submitted pieces so they need to be appropriate for both.
Careful with that hood, the way the helmets are rigged into the character are through a socket in the head. When the character looks left, right, and especially down, the hood around the shoulders is going to clip through his chest pretty badly. If you can find a way to root it to the chest I'd be very interested to know how you did it.
Dont worry the hood wont be as a whole mesh - there will be upper and lower hood mesh . The lower one will be part of the chest, the upper one will be part of the head bone. I`ll send some wip screenshots soon

Nice design and thanks a lot for the chainmail example. It's looks really great! the scale mail is a cool contrast of forms also. I agree with some of the other comments about keeping it away from fantasy too much - in this I think the blades on the bow might be a bit too much. (I know this may sound bs coming from my design lol) Also I would make sure you can do secondary objects to the helmet and actually skin weight them to the skeleton... From what I've read so far that is not the case. It's too bad since I really like the hood option, and it would be great if it were possible. Look forward to seeing more!
Thats pretty cool.
I feel the skull section is letting it down a bit, feels less loved and strapped on top of something that already works well on its own.
Would be a shame to lose the lower chain mail area, definitely something worth looking into as it helps bring the whole piece together.
Thank you for the feedback , really useful ! I have my doubts on the skull part as well, but i`m gonna model it just to see how it will look in final. My general idea is to have more customized parts so people can choose from ingame. Will send update asap

Sorry for the late response mate.
What i plan to do is cut in a way where skin issues will be avoided , thus speaking i might fix this and that in the low poly. I`ll try my best to fix any potential problems.
Sorry if this sounds too critical, and if I do sound too critical, just know that it's my opinion, and it may or may not be a barrel of pigeon poo, and you don't have to read what's coming if you don't want to.
This doesn't look medieval or fantasy to me at all, it doesn't even look plausibly medieval, even if I knew nothing about medieval armour or dress. It looks like modern niche fashion. You've put a lot of work into this, but it looks like something you could buy from a goth store/biker's store/kinky online sex store.
Nothing makes sense; chainmail is supposed to hang loose and conform to the body with it's own weight, and especially not stretched over your face like a full-face mask, or plate armour, because even a moderate glancing hit from a sword would break your nose, or a cheek bone, and bodkin arrows would go right through it.
Those metal studs and nose rings don't fit in. they aren't medieval in the slightest, and they aren't very fantasy either; they're modern, and so is the slick black leather. It's what emo/punk/goth teenagers wear.
Your modeling techniques are good, but I really, really suggest that you base this helmet at least somewhat in the medieval renaissance time period, or at least work with the mesh until it could be plausibly made with medieval armouring or clothing techniques.
Hope that helps. On the offhand, if this were a model for some sort of undercity, post apocalyptic tunnel snakes rule(!) game, it would look pretty damn neat, and would fit in perfectly.
Dont forget , it`s still a game and contest is part of online shop promotion where after all the purpose is Player.Buy.Item. People with your knowledge and competence i dont exactly think you`ll find in the multiplayer player community, where the psychology behind players with potential wallets is a lot different than just calculating how to be protected by arrows or certain weapon attack angles. So as closely as i can describe it, it`s like the sweets industry for the kids.
Chivalry is based on strong realistic foundation, but still the game has fictional elements ( unless you think it`s realistically accurate a castle level floating over rivers of lava or archer with a knife killing a heavy armored knight etc etc. )
I agree with your critics from functional perspective, but still , it`s a game
Oh, the protection part wasn't really my main point, although I'm glad you took the criticism well.
I feel just doesn't really evoke a medieval appearance; I don't see any influence from medieval European aesthetics; not even of other cultures like, I dunno, Egyptian, Norse, Roman, or anything that signifies it belongs in a medieval world, other than it having chain mail.
Just some suggestions, but if this is for a mason archer, maybe add some mirror armour aesthetics, some small embossed steel plates, or a bit of fur, or other middle-eastern/asian influences. I think it looks too modern at the moment.
jnumber9 , yes that`s correct but not really a big issue, UV mapping and fitting into 1024 will be the real challenge
Zetheros, mate i tried to adress as much as i can on the feedback you gave me. I think i got rid of some of the annoying elements, it`s a little bit more assasin`s feeling now, but i think i`m ok with that Thanks again for feedback bro
Looks beautiful. BUT: I would advise you to remove the spikes from the shoulders, I find it breaks the rest of the design, but that is just my personal opinion.
But here is the final high poly shots. There will be two modes for the mouth area for people
who enjoy either more ornamented and chainmailed masks or a version with only cloth mask for more clean preview. Totally up to the player choice
I wonder... how will the lower part of the hood work? It seems to me that you'd need to heat bind it to the mason archer skeleton for it to properly deform with the shoulders and chest, otherwise it's going to clip all over the place when the player looks around. I think shiv was thinking about this too.
My understanding isn't complete but I think it would require it's own animset, could probably use the same animset as the character if it was skinned to the same skeleton, but I'm not sure if helmets support animsets?

Sorry for the spam just a quick snapshot how i did the chainmail.
Bigger resolution here attached
9thKnight - that chainmail pissed me off till i made it but worth it lol

Zetheros, I`m doing some reworks to minimize that kinky sexshop thing, i`m gonna post rework today, at least as much as time allows .
I dont take critics bad, but you might need to work on your way you deliver critics Some people might feel offended - diplomacy is power , use it
These are the changes i did according to different sources of feedback.
Cheers
