Hey guys, I need to model this boot, but I have no idea how to approach it. I want to make a high poly model in 3ds max. Should I start with symmetry and then bend it to a foot when it's done ? Should I start with blocking the forms around a foot and then build up on that? But then it's very hard to make these panels the boot has in asymmetry...
Any help will be appreciated

so for boots i usually start with the bottom view, tracing the sole, once that is done i build up the sideview, then the front, with those 2 planes established it really easy to fill in the gaps. For a highpoly version i would build a working shape dummy and then retopo the individual cloth patches on top.

here is a simple example for a helmet, but the same method applies to anything.
id zbrush it with dynamesh
its very easy and fast . also i can switch symmetry on and off at any time
zbrush is good at dealing with that .. ( example i switch symmetry on .. get basic shape . then switch off to sculpt asymmetrical folds on the fabric part . i feel like shape is not right . switch symmetry on again use move brush it works even if the object isnt perfectly symmetrical )
as for the rope u can go with an IMM brush . or do it in max using a curve or something
then retopology ( make separate subtools at this stage for more control ) . sculpt again adding all fine details ... ur done
this way i get it to look organic and asymmetrical
edit : i found some old pictures maybe they will help demonstrate

link because i dont want to clutter your thread
So I can't really fake it, I guess.
This is what I have so far and I don't know how to advance.
take it into zbrush and work on nailing the overall form, so ignore all the seams all the small details, just get the shape right, and the folds. then once youve nailed that, do all the other stuff with extract + IMM brushes.
Its a much looser workflow, and even though you might end up having trouble with making really clean edges, I can tell your going for that rough look anyways.
Progress so far, am I going in the right direction with this?
