I would go with colder versions of those colors if I was going to shift his color scheme towards those colors. I would also suggest not using too much gold on him, but rather to use them sparingly as powerful accents where they'll have the most impact without being distracting.
I think Blossomalex's Razor recent Razor set is a good example of both of those methods of injecting outside colors to his scheme. The gold is very pale and subtle, and used to emphasize certain hard edges in the armor. http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=306142514
Edit: I know the item in question here is an in-game item representation, so my advice is probably a bit too broad-stroke. I do feel like even those in-game item reproductions for heroes need to at least have an alternate hero-appropriate color scheme, though. Kite's recent desolator bow is a good example of this practice! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=295681846&searchtext=desolator
