Hey guys, I just wasted the better part of a good night's sleep on starting up a piece I've always wanted to try out: The Unreal Tournament Flak Cannon.
I loved the UT99 version of this weapon, mostly because more than any other version of the gun, the UT99 version looked like re-purposed industrial equipment that was better suited to killing people than it was... whatever it was originally designed for. It was like the biggest surge of testosterone: It was a power tool and a gun at the same time!
This is what I have so far. Will I finish it? probably not, but hey. this was fun.

If you dont see it, it dosnt have to exist , so no need to model the rest
Some fancy base materials on the highpoly, some UT background and you had a finished looking picture
making materials for highpolys without UVs is a lot of fun too, qubic mapping, some tiling textures and gg
having a LOT of fun with this.
took this model over to the UT4 community forum and got some advice.
More iteration. cant even recognize it from the original...
Angry that this thread hasn't had more praise! Your high-poly stuff is fucking inspiring, man! Could you post wires please?
Seriously, this is amazing. Really nice design and modelling, i would also like wires
Thanks for all your comments, guys! I hope I don't disappoint you!
Awesome! can't wait to hear back!
yet more iteration!
made some changes to the model to help generate a better first-person silhouette Different FOV scales are just to see the difference in views and proportions.
a bit of an update.
Edit: Almost forgot!
also i would spend some more time on the details those screws in the FPS view look warped and have no real detail to them.
The modeling seems very clean but you should soften your edges like others have said, also, it's hard to tell from the screenshot, but the part with the screen looks a bit strange since it looks like there's an empty gap behind the screen and to the sides of the screen. It's not really a problem, the original flak cannon had a similar screen but there was no gap around it if I recall correctly.
Other than that, everything looks great.
Well, the Flak Cannon is really a huge industrial power-tool turned into a huge shrapnel launching death machine.
I can't imagine more of a phallic projection than that!
lol the big balls that hang off of trucks.
did some more work.
older update, but I don't mind feedback.
Ha, that would be awesome! But there are a lot of cool concepts going on the community forums, obviously the Flak is one of the most popular weapons in UT, so a ton of people have their own 'relationship' with the weapon. I just hope that whatever concept Epic decide to use retains the 'space industrial' feel of the Unreal, Ut99, ut2K and UC2 Flaks.
I think I can call the geometry 'done'. at some point I need to move on to the next phase.
Will you Rig and Animate the weapon, too?
Or is there another person for that?
Awesome work man, I cant wait to see the final version!
Some progress on the low-poly at the moment it's ~20k triangles. I'm aiming for 20-30k triangles and a 8192 base texture set (de-res'd to 4096 in game most likely). Please let me know any concerns, as I want this model to be ready to hold up detail at 4k. Crit away.
Purchased a license for DDO, best damn thing I've bought this year! The Ol' cannon is moving along. It's just about time to hand-off to the ladies and gentlemen over at Epic. Crits are welcome!
The materials aren't final, so crits WILL be considered! I'm happy to iterate further.
Also, UE has an alright auto-LOD thing, but I'm not sure how good it would be for an animated asset...
