a sneak peak of the cinematic character I have been working on, this is my come back to 3D after a year and half was wasted in the army, now I'm trying to push my limits a little bit and achieve some realism, I will publish the full character soon, stay tuned....

Notice the different shades - everything from almost blonde to dark brown, with a bit of red tossed in. Granted there will be less variance with darker hair colors, but there should still be some.
Also note that not every hair is the same thickness; the outliers tend to be thinner. It might be simplest to show different thicknesses by using the alpha channel - thinner hairs are more transparent.
