Cable rigging in Max

I have a question on general ideas you guys may have on rigging cables and wires for gaming.

Just an example, if I'm doing an animation of parts being pulled out of a computer, typically the cables and wires are kind of stuffed and wrapped in the case in weird positions and extend as you pull parts they are connected to out. So what would be a good way to approach setting up these cables for animation?
I've tried spline ik, but that becomes very tedious to animate. (it works though).
I've used HI Solver, which works in limited scenarios, but not all scenarios. In some cases I set up a few chains with HI solver then linked them to each other letting one ik goal drive another ik goal. But it doesn't always give me the best control and at times has issues with the skin.

Any ideas or tips are appreciated!
