Gamma and linear alpha questions for mips

I'm just stuck with the PS DDS exporter and alpha maps from 3DS Max.

The way PS generates mips uses a kaiser filter and the gamma encoding value.

If your diffuse map is corrected at 2.2, are the alpha maps also ok to be mipped at 2.2?

Is this data type appropriate for that use? Max has gamma/LUT stuff enabled so I'm assuming my alpha map is encoded to gamma 2.2 and needs to have the kaiser filter correct for this?

I'm just trying to get really nice mips so the alpha testing looks as nice as possible but I'm not sure what approach to take for the 'technically' correct approach.

Or am I best in Max rendering out the mips for alpha and putting them into a DDS manually, keeping everything in gamma space?

Or is alpha at it's best for alpha testing in linear space given it's conveying transparency data and not light intensity data?

Thanks for any tips/advice!
