Best way to go about animating a 2d character holding a 3d object??

How best can this be done?Was discussing this with a friend the other day about combining 2d and 3d animation,preferably 2d for characters and 3d for environments and props.
I am thinking u do the animation of the character grabing and holding an imaginary stuff or a placeholder of the supposed 3d object.Export animation from 2d app fully drawn and color shaded from 2d animation software as image sequence.

-Import 2d animation into 3d app as animated texture into a plane and parent to camera.Model 3d object,position and animate it and then export the rendered animation of the 3d object but my problem is how do u figure out how the fingers should interact with the 3d object?which fingers should be in front and behind?
