JacqueChoi: Scruffy thumbnails and then modelling in Maya followed by a quick render in Keyshot that I paint over in PS.
EarthQuake: I've been doing concepting in 3d for vehicles, weapons etc. for years. It's just the quickest way for me to get something useable together.
Here's a character design for the quadcopter's pilot/racer:

Haha yeah I know, I'm a big fan of your work. What I meant to say is you're putting a lot more detail in them these days. You used to do more basic 3d and paintover for a lot of the detail, unless I'm remembering wrong. Its cool to see you go straight to the detailed 3d concept.
Wait, I'm being dumb. Seeing your blockout here it looks like you're still doing a lot of over-painting. It just looked like awesome 3d at first glace. You had me fooled. :poly124:
The blockouts for the vehicles have more geometric detail than the character, but I'm still doing a fair amount of work in PS. In the case of the quadcopter for instance, I did 3 renders with different materials (painted metal, rusted metal, chrome) and I then used masks with bevel and emboss turned on in the layer styles to blend between them. It's fun to scratch away the paint on the top layer using a custom brush to expose the metal below. I also did something similar to add the rivets etc. If I get the chance I'll show some examples (if you're interested).
Here's an image to explain the process. Let me know if you have anymore questions. One thing I forgot to mention in the notes, makes sure to turn pressure sensitivity on for opacity in the brush settings to blend between the layers.

Here are some renders of the blockout models since you asked so nicely!
how are you concepting it?

Not sure how much further I'll get with the entry, but I finished the concept of the vehicle at least!
