Vertex painting BSP geometry in UDK

I'm really new to UDK so excuse me if this is fairly obvious. I was wondering if it was possible to vertex paint BSP geometry in UDK or are static meshes the only choice. BSP brushes seem to create relatively simple geometry but I thought maybe the engine could tessellate them to allow for vertex painting. Sorry for the stupid question. Thanks!
