Decided to go for an aquatic beast/rider approach. The beast is a giant squid probably featuring all sorts of subdermal gadgetry to link it mentally and physically to the pilot.
Good point R0gue, the addition of the lance was a last minute decision and he would definitely be facing the wrong way for squid-jet based speed you'd want for jousting!
The whole 'Which way round' thing has been a question mark since the start. The way I figure it is that in the hypothetical game normal movement would be slower and with the dangerous end pointing forward, when you hit the turbo/sprint button the squid/rider would do a quick on-end pivot for jetty goodness. Possibly with added ink.
Depressingly I've not had much time to work on this, but squeezed in an hour or so today to rough out the basic shape and a rough of the divers mask.
