Just a quick question. If two-sides of an object that are identical, share the same UV space, yet have different material IDs, will the materials I apply to the IDs be different, or the same because they share the same UV space.
they will be different because they got different materials, the UVs just define where on a texture to get the information from, the materials define what the information is.
Also, is there some sort of "rule of thumb" as far as an appropriate number of MAT Ids on an object? Does having a lot of Mat IDs bog down performance more than having a bunch of unique textures and materials.
