Haven't done a lot of character work, so this competition will be good practice.

The current idea is a Jousting tournament. Expect the guy is riding a chicken instead of a horse. Going for the comical play of a massive knight in full armour riding on a tiny chicken. :P

Here is a concept on the head. Not much detail in the top of his head as he will have a knights helmet on.

Did some anatomy tweaks and added the feet.

Used decimation master on the model and uploaded it to sketchfab. The edges are a bit choppy but you get the jist.

Still got some tweaks left on this guy, Will give him a bandage on his hand,a few plasters maybe, small cape and then its on to texturing!

Thanks for the critique! I think you are right, the arms need simplifying. I might push the forearms and hands as well to mimic popeye, see how it looks.

Looking good man! I think the normal map might be inverted - the cuts in the metal on the chest are coming outwards. Looks nice so far love the chicken!

I kinda liked the chicken before it was fully feathered, with feathers just at the neck. It looked like it had been mostly plucked. It would have been kinda funny if it stayed like that, with a few long feathers also on the tail.

I agree with Burhtun, the feathers only on the neck looked better. And I'd suggest you at least scale her up to double the current size so it could look like the knight could actually ride her.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I blurred out the chicken feathers, is this the kind of thing you mean? I'm not sure how I would texture the unfeathered parts. I will scale up the chicken a bit, but I want it to be quite small for comedic value :P

I think what you've done with smoothing the feathers helps from a detail-hierarchy standpoint. But I think it's still maybe tending a little realistic for the humorous characters. You could push that humor and simplification further. This is what I saw in my head when I saw the stage of your sculpt at post #15... the model was pretty much done to my eyes :P

I hope I have time to finish this, Starting doing a bit of texture practice on the head. Still need to tweak a lot of the masks.

Just simple color for the unfeathered parts would look good. It just keeps the cartoonish feel I think. Unless you really want to be funny, you could make the unfeathered part look like skin so its as if the chicken was half plucked for cooking :P

For the chicken I was thinking of having some pock marks and bits where there were still feathers like you said I wasn't sure on how to do the wings though, I might leave that un-plucked as well as the back.

This is funny. Really funny. I imagine him being all serious and ready for the joust and then as soon as he is let free the chicken goes crazy and drags the knight all over the place. And the knight is holding on for dear life.
