Thanks guys! I've thought about doing some kind of CAT artillery for a while, and I think it's perfect for this comp.
ZacD:
Yeah, lots of these types of CAT telehandlers have big stabilizers on the front, but I'm going to move it to the back, and beef it up, artillery style. I'm also gonna cover the thing in reactive armour plates and smoke launchers because TANKS.
ZacD took the words out of my mouth! I want this guy to be a long distance sniper setup, with a lightwieght, mobile feel to him. And also part of the reason I love the telehandler profile is because of this cabin is just perched on the side.
But I was thinking about what Adam said, and why I had some of the same feelings about it needing beefy armour. So Ive shifted from the concept, where he has this front line, beefy tank barrel, and gone for a longer thinner gun that (will have) more sniper rifle elements to it.
After a busy as fuck two weeks at work (which will probably get worse) here's a small update.
I saw a construction vehicle while I was out, and was blown away by it's compact stabilizers. So I spent some time googling it and building reference for a new stabilizer design.
Otherwise I haven't had the time to work on the high poly, so I've just been tweaking the blockout. Still no cabin though.
PILOT
I've been doing alot of thinking about the pilot! Firstly, I'm gonna pilot this thing! By which I mean I 3d scanned myself, and I'm going to use the data as the base to concept and sculpt from. My thinking for the pilot is that he is a very long range artillery gunner and needs to be plugged in to live satellite information feeds showing the battlefield. The cabin of the CAT would be full of compact computer systems that come online when preparing to fire. He's also got to have some personal defense in case of someone sneaking up to him, but I really want to emphasise that for one, he is lightly armoured, and two, its all about the big gun!
I worked alot on my head scan and body scan today. I'm probably not going to do much with the body scan, but I'm taking my time with the head scan data to get the most out of it.
In the mean time, here's some super rough gear blockouts on a decimated body scan:

I'm trying not to go into detail anywhere, I want to build up all the 'medium' detail so I can still change things drastically at will :B

not worth an update, but I did a bit on the suspension as well.
