Hey guys,
It has been a while since I have done some serious hard surface models, so I figured I should do a few "hardcore" weapons models. No floaters, no nDo for details and what not (well maybe some minor details like scratches/dents and stuff).
I started this model a month or so ago and haven't touched it since then. Figured I'd finally finish it up since I have some free time.
The Katana has some pinching here and there, but it is not too obvious, especially with the material settings I have in mind. So I am not too concerned about them.
I might have gone a bit too "Add more GEO" crazy, but it is too late to go back.
Some edges might also be a bit too sharp, whatever I can salvage, I will.
Any feedback is appreciated.
I am planning on doing 3 weapons, for 3 characters I have in mind that I want to do.
First a katana (as you can see above). After I am done with the katana, I plan on making a handgun. The third will be a unique weapon, I already have something in mind for it but I'll keep that a surprise. =]
Since the katana is based on the "Murasama" sword from Metal Gear Rising, I'll probably do some changes in the design later.
Still debating is I should make a scabbard for this sword. If I do, I'll probably design on from scratch, not using the official scabbard from MGR.

Calling the HP done.
When I get back from my day job I'll post some wires.
Nice !
Good work mate. Keep it up !
I got asked for the wires by a couple of people. So here it is.
Sorry for the cluttered image.
Can I get some opinion on the color scheme you guys like more? I am kinda gravitating towards the one with purple.
It looks more feminine, which would fit the character that would wield it more imo.
I'll probably also change the "Murasama" text to "Musamane".
Since the "murasama" name is a joke thingy the developers used for the sword (It should be Muramasa) I figured I'd change the "masamune" to "musamane"
Mura apparently means unevenness in physical matter or spiritual condition. And sama "master" or lord or something along those lines. So I guess "master of irregularity".
Mu... I don't really understand. It's a Buddhist term that goes along yes and no. It kind of means "nothing" or "not". And "ne" is a confirmation of the phrase before it.
So I figured I'd make the name as wacky as "master or irregularity". So Mu Sama ne.
Roughly translating to "Master of nothing(ness), right?".
Probably waaaay over thinking things, but I figured it would be a fun easter egg kind of thing. (I doubt anyone will actually notice it anyway).
Anyway I have started blocking out a Berreta Nano. Haven't got much to show yet.
Basically got the overlay proportions and what not fixed, doing a bunch of research on it.
Anyway I wanted to ask you guys how you would normally go about modeling a gun.
This gun will basically be a prop for a character, but I want to be able to present the gun as a standalone thing suitable for FP, as well. (I might end up doing lods and what not).
Do you guys model the insides of a gun as well if it is meant to be animated? Or just what will be visible? In other words How complex should a FP gun model be?
I would probably just model only that which is visible, but I figured I'd ask someone with more experience just to be sure.
TL;DR
What color scheme do you prefer?
How detailed should an animatable first person gun be?
Anyway had some time to work on this.
and imo it dosnt look good, Id just leave it away, it dosn't help.
Also do you really want to color the blade ? there are so many super interesting metal patterns you can use that you cant really find anywhere else

heres something i did like ages ago haha (bad and wrong tho)
Red also seems to work best, the others just drag it down so far
Muramasa was the name of a japanese master swordsmith, masamune another one, thats where all those game names refer to
Anyway just to make sure, you are talking about the light grey part with the 3 grooves right? Since I plan on deviating from the concept anyway I might as well change it later on.
Just an fyi, the katana was based on this concept art:

I was actually thinking about incorporating damascus steel patterns into the blade before. I'll play around with black as well. (just writing it here so I dont forget it. =])
I havent locked any colour scheme/designs yet and will definitely revisit it.
But for now I just want to focus on modelling.
