Hi guys, long time lurker, created account to post, never posted, forgot login credentials, created new account and so on
I'm currently a freelancing concept artist.. been working in game companies in both sweden and japan.
I have posted this on other online communities like deviant art, but I thought i'd share it with you guys as well. I love Spelunky, but I always wondered if it could make the jump into 3D, and I immediately thought of Mario Galaxy (which i also adore). It felt like the most logic way to go
If you guys are interested in seeing some more of my stuff, i got my website at
http://www.tonyholmsten.com and also a sketchblog at

Looking forward to be posting more stuff here!
cheers

Yourname942: I did a quick 3D mockup first in Modo, and applied some basic lighting to it (mostly just to get shadows correct), and used that as a template, and painted over it. Here is the mockup render i used:
ambershee: I'm not sure what you mean with cubes by poles, do you mean the square shaped lamps sitting on the poles, or do you mean the actual... "north/south poles" of the sphere?
Great piece of art! You've really captured all those nice little details that make Spelunky such a brilliant game, I love these kind of pieces where you can really spend time looking at each little detail.
I started a spelunker sculpt a while back, makes me want to go back to it and try to finish it.
I'm trying to wrap my head around the deformation of cubes around a sphere. Would there not be increased pinching towards the poles?
Francesco: cheers !
OhNoo: Thanks!
ambershee: Oh, hm that is.. possible, I'm no 3d wizard haha. But I think if you use custom shapes on the cubes and don't follow any kind of repetitive pattern its not that noticeable. I attached a screenshot of one of the poles.
huh... this attachment came out weird... ah well if you click the link it works.
Instead you get pinching where the 'sheets' that build it meet
(It's a lot better for this kind of thing of course!)
