Krita is my favorite digital painting app, and on top of that, it's open source! They're running a kickstarter to fund two devs full time to work on the 2.9 release. Check it out!
I second this, Krita replaced Photoshop for me even before my CC sub ran out. It's focused a bit differently than Photoshop, but do take a look at it folks.
Yes yes and yes It's my main painting app since 2.8 was released and I love it ! I would donate if I could but right now things are too tigh for me. Best luck for the krita team !
If money is tight (something that I can entirely understand!) then don't worry, but just help spread the word. We're really trying to reach out to artists who aren't yet in the libre graphics world, we want to spread the word as far as we can!
Krita's been a pretty big surprise for me. They're focused on the right features (also for 3d texture artists, with tiled painting and upcoming 3d preview and multi-channel painting), and they seem to move a lot faster than similar free programs. If they keep this up I can see them replacing Manga Studio for my painting software, and with the 3d features and psd support it might make me open Photoshop a lot less...
I'd like krita to succeed, but some of the UI/navigation is a tad annoying. It feels like they're trying to intentionally distance themselves from photoshop, but in doing so it comes off alittle clunky in areas. One big irritation for me is that your eraser's size is locked to the size of your paint brush, unless you switch to an 'eraser brush', but then that messes up your workflow if you're using more than one brush, because you can't quick switch between them.
anyway hope they meet their goal, it's probably the best alternative to PS yet.
I agree that standardisation is something they should work on, either default or as an option. For instance shift-clicking to make a line, rather than using a seperate line tool... this isn't just Photoshop, a LOT of software uses this, including even 3d painting software.
This should be a news on main page!
I don't use Krita righ now because not have much time to learn new software. However I supported this campaign. Couple months and finally I will be able to remove PS from my workflow and cancel CrapyCloud subscription.
I will have to give this a go. My main problem in jumping from photoshop to any other painting program is that nothing handles layer functionality and masks quite as well as photoshop, both of which are super important for quickly getting ideas out that you can iterate on rapidly.
Same as Rayph. Masks, Layers and clipping mask are my common workflow and for now only photoshop can do the job. Thankfully Krita developers will work on that after this campaign.
One really nifty feature in Krita is the wraparound tool, makes painting seamless textures easy. You just press 'w', then enable open gl in settings to visualize the repeating effect. I had been doing this previously in blender.
REALTIME MIRRORING IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, AND REALTIME TILING. That's all there is to say. It's all I've used it for so far, but boy is it lovely. It's what Photoshop's been missing since forever. I think Krita has a bright future.

I wonder if I can install Krita without also getting KDE's Nepomuk "semantic desktop" stuff, which I don't like. I don't need or want anything indexing all my personal data.
It would be cool if there was a pure Qt-driven version not requiring KDE, since Krita does look pretty good.
Just realized they featured one of my pieces in their kickstarter. Awesome!
I highly recommend Krita as a primary painting application, especially for illustration and concept art. its great as it is and with further development it can only get better.

a Qt based Krita will be cool, also, last time i checked 2.8 the 6d art pen doesn't work quite as expected, if they fix that in the new version, i'd be happy to pick it up as a serious painting alternative.
Give the latest builds a try -- we fixed rotation for the new kind of art pen on Windows and Linux (the Intuos 3 art pen did different things).
Also, while the kickstarter is running (more than 50% funded -- but there's a way to go still, so please help spread the word wide and far), we've already started working on some things.
For instance, in tonight's build, there'll be support for raw heightmaps, both 8 and 16 bits deep :-)

Well, you can quick switch between brush presets with the / key. We're also working on some ideas for having shorcuts for the last X brushes, but those aren't really ripe yet.

I know about the quickswitch key, but I'm saying if you use more than 2 paint brushes in your work flow you can't really quickswitch to an eraser brush.
Perhaps you could add a setting to not constrain the eraser size to that of the current brush?
I don't do digital painting, but I pledged and I support your efforts. It's great to see an open source project with so much activity and momentum. In the end we all profit
It's also worth to mention how well the campaign is going. With 10 days left, it's at more than 90% of the goal.

Yes! I love that feature.

is the latest build 2.8.3? where to fetch?
just checked, now art pen works beautifully, cheers!

Yay!

Hope you make the stretch goal as well!
