Hello. I was wondering where to start when it comes to modeling heads. More specifically, high-detailed portraits. I have been modeling in Max and Maya for a few years now and have begun to make the transition to Zbrush.
I just don't know where to start when learning correct head modeling. Watching the pros do it on YouTube, I have seen that there are so many different methods and approaches. Some just dive right in, the others outline bony landmarks on the skull, etc.
To help learn, I have been studying skull anatomy. I started to learn the skull and sculpt it (poorly, but I am getting there) using the Ryan Kingslien method for the base (attached is just before jaw extraction).

after that, what i did, was make studies of certain facial parts like mouth, ears, etc.
i'd suggest that before you take on these studies, you do them correctly and learn the anatomical design behind them. some people say practice makes perfect, but really it's 'perfect practice makes perfect'.
after you're comfortable with all of that, is when i recommend you do a complete head. then do hundreds of heads to get good. yes, hundreds.

Thanks for the reply. I totally agree with the "perfect practice remark", which is why I would like to get a valid method established before I continue to practice thoroughly.
I will definitely check out his classes, though I cannot enroll by the next deadline unfortunately.
How did you do the skull? Did you do a particular method, or just sculpt the forms themselves from reference/scratch? Also, for the form studies, did you sculpt them on a box/sphere, or on a pre-sculpted head base? I was wondering if there were any portions of the attached skull that may need work. I am totally down to start over in order to drill the anatomy into my head.
