Hello Guys,
I wanted to improve my portfolio and my painting skills and decided to do a 3D model only using hand painted textures. I noticed I'm very bad at it. I'm attaching a preview of what I've done so far. I've dedicated a lot of time on this model and I want it to look good. I know I won't be able to reach Blizzard's paint art style but as long as it looks good I'm happy.
Any advices or tips on how to paint or improve parts of the model? I've been using a soft brush with pen pressure on opacity and size.
Blizzard's concept art:

The preview images are in maya with lights turned off. I'm aiming for 2 texture maps of 512x512.
Thank you for your time.
Joan Santus.

You textures need more work, you have a good base going but you need to push it more. Add in medium and small details.
The textures are still looking flat. Paint in some AO, and really punch out your shadows and highlights to make it pop more.

I'll continue working on this tomorrow when I get the chance.
What other things do you think need improvement?

- Add more color variation to the wood
- Add more color variation to the metal, it's really flat at the moment
I would take a look at the present wow models (or the upcomming ones from WoD (good side for it: mmo-champion.com) and see where my model differ from them.
(eg. http://media.mmo-champion.com/images/news/2014/june/tier17ShamanHD.jpg for the metal on the shoulder parts)
I'm going to try to paint the metal similar to the one in the WoW image. I'm not sure how to start though. I guess I'll look for a tutorial on youtube or just experiment.
How do I show the image instead of the attachment btw?
Use the insert image button to put in the post.
ref Tyson Murphy for technique. All in all you want 3 distinct shades. Hi, mid and low and then a lot of variation in between so it doesn't look flat.
