The technique is called HD Indexing in Photoshop and it's really simple and easy.
Using this technique, creating pixel art prototypes is an easy task that nearly everyone can do.
Of course, handpainted pixels will always have a special place in my heart, but sometimes it can be bothersome to pump out a ton of sprites by hand, when you can just make a bunch of renders of a simple model.
