Coincidentally, that's an American problem. If you managed to independently reach to the same result in Europe, the patent is effectively void.

True but the *threat* of lawyers is still very real. I've totally seen that happen aswell with some big-name parties due to lack of them being willing to defend their independently-arrived-at conclusion.
So is this to protect their specific way of presenting items on their website? If that's true this patent will essentially mean that every other online store will have to shoot items against a non-white background, or substantially alter the camera and light placement.
But this is bullshit and it'll get tossed at some point.

I sometimes wonder if the patent department is staffed with internet trolls. How this gets past even the most casual of glances is disappointing.
