UV scaling

So far I usually leave all my UVS very consistent, but I've seen some videos scale up certain parts. Its understandable that you need more detail in certain places, BUT doesn't it make it harder to line up skin details and such? IE if you unwrap the arms separate the torso and scale the torso or something, and apply the same size skin texture it WILL be larger or smaller on one or the other..
So..
Is it common practice to scale or such, or just scale and morph uvs to keep consistency ?
