Maya 2014: Comp locks up when objects clip

The lock ups don't happen every time but often enough that I have to save before translating an object through the geometry of another object. Working in wireframe mode prevents this but naturally that's not always practical.

Is there a setting that can correct this or is my hardware crapping out?

this has happened to me a couple times this week (and just right now), you on sp4 as well?... that is a cazy bug. if anyone can scrape a fatal error text that would be great. i haven't ran that dr watson in a while, i wonder if that would catch the error. it hasen't happened for me at home, but ill try and replicate it. scary

Need more info. Are you doing anything like booleans, or just simply moving two pieces together so they intersect? Are you using Viewport 2.0, High Quality Rendering, or Software viewport renderer?

Haven't installed SP4 yet. No booleans are involved. Like I said, translating an object through the geo of another object can cause a lock up. I am indeed using Viewport 2.0

Haven't seen that one before. Does this happen in every viewport mode (Default, High Quality, Viewport 2.0)? In the meantime, you could try enabling Shading > Interactive Shading from the viewport menu. This renders your viewport as a wireframe any time you select a component, move an object, or move your camera. Pretty safe and still lets you work with shaded on in some capacity.

    [edit]

Interactive Shading doesn't work with Viewport 2, so never mind haha. Does it still crash in other viewport modes?

viewport 2.0, viewport AO is on, phong materials...copied an object and moved/rotated it through my mesh in shaded mode. the object was parented to another object wehn i copied and moved it. i have some heavy modeling to get though so ill really try and notice whats happening when it goes down again.

Sounds likely to be a video driver issue. Turn off viewport AO and try it again, or switch to the software renderer and try it again. If doing one of those two things works and you can narrow it down, try upgrading your drivers. What video hardware do you have?
