Hey guys i am in the process of taking one of my portfolio peices and fixing it up im going to post the concept and what i started with, and what i have so far
Ive been spending some time fixing the model up here is an update of where i am right now, These are quick renders without the AO, I have not go to texturing yet, but i plan to make the building more true to the concept, and more weathered, any other ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated
I wood (Get it? Its a pun! ) work on the wood texture a bit more. As is now, or at least in my opinion, it looks a bit muddy, and lacking definition. Other than that it looks fairly solid. Keep it up.
You're missing the cellar window/grate at the bottom left of the building.
Most of the logs are unfinished, and still have their bark. Some of the larger logs even have stumps of large branches still attached.
The columns supporting the canopies should have 2 smoothing groups - one for the bottom and top cylinders, and another for the truncated cone between them. As with most of the logs, the thicker cylinder still has the bark, so it is much darker than the upper portions.
The shingles are a thin layer over a thicker layer of planks.
Thank you all for the feedback I plan on texturing it some more this week,, d walker if you had some time
Could you draw over the JPEG and show me exactly what you mean when your talking about the smoothing groups?
Overall I think I need to give most of the wood more texture
right now its a quick maya render, and as far as art direction im trying to match the concept model as much as possible, but make the building look like its been in a forest for a good amount of time
I really recommend moving your rendering to a game engine right now, be that Marmoset Toolbag, UDK, Cryengine, etc.
Nothing beats showing off game art in an actual real-time game engine renderer. You can also tweak your specular/gloss better in the game engine as opposed to a Maya Render (unless you've nailed down or have a real-time Maya rendering solution).

As well, what art direction are you going for?
