I'm no animator (not even close), but I've played with animating paintings/trying pixel art before, just for fun. Something about it coming to life makes it all worth it.
Nice work Highelf. I haven't seen anyone animate their painting before- Really hope to see more of this!
Great to see some fx work here Muzz. I initially questioned your sanity when you said you used PS... but shortcuts and ghosting could make a world of difference!
There we go. there are still a few clunky things i don't like. Notably how you can't select what gets onion skinned or not, hence the background colour work around.
Oh one more thing i set the shortcut to turn on onionskin to ctrl+*.
Keep in mind that photoshop is a super simple animation program, you can do great work but there is no advanced tweening and no bones. It's a pure frame by frame workflow with a kickass brush engine. But if you want to learn animation imo there is no better way.
Now in terms of actually making good animation, well that's a lot harder to explain, maybe i'll get around to making that effects animation tutorial one day.
Those where for a specific project. Still in the works. Dado, is there a larger image of the file you attached? I'm really curious about using Sai for animation.
Oh man that workflow looks painful! The Photoshop workflow is a god damned miracle as far as I'm concerned, as it makes the need for crazy workflows go out the window.
Allan! cool to see you breaking into the world of animation!
I think you need to pay more attention to timing and spacing though, everything here is linear, you don't have any easing in the timing of the effects, and that's going to make all the difference.
I'd also suggest taking some time and freeze framing some high quality action anime. You will find animation tricks that blow your mind. Stuff like strobing an animation (skipping frames) can create mind bending effects. Probably the best examples of these things are in the rebuild evangelion movies.
Actually I did have delays on them, not sure if it is because I animated them in CS4, but when I saved them out as a gif the delays didn't seem to carry over. Is there a step I am missing? Really new to animating in photoshop.
Yay, it's ready. This is the start of the credit roll for my Manannan series. It's done in Flash with imported effects via TimelineFX which I was intoduced to whilst working on a 2d scroller.

I know it's not strictly or remotely video game art - but I hope to be producing some more relevant stuff soon.
Ok figured out what the problem was. If anyone is using the legacy frame mode, the no delay mode (0.00) is too fast to process so it just defaults it to 0.1secs. After playing around I found that 0.06 - 0.07 seem to save to the gif and offer that same no delay timing.
Hope this helps anybody running into the same problem.

Really like the fighting girl, and the animated painting is awesome.

Now i wanna see some animation peeps .
Cheers man! Fixed them

I don't use the legacy frame mode, i only ever use video layers, where you have to manually pad out frames.
video is still converting, but I'm going to try to start doing some more of these.
I'm a flash based animator - though I also animate in PS and ToonBoom. I'm uploading a short vid to Vimeo - tried it as a gif but it was too large.

Maybe try and avoid those gradient effects? they can look a bit cheesy when combined with cell shading.
Hope this helps anybody running into the same problem.
This is a fucking AWESOME video about animating in Photoshop. WATCH IT
