When I render with Maya (using Mental Ray) it almost always freezes so I have no clue how far the render has been processed. Technicaly there is no reason for Maya to freeze as I have all my cpu cores but one under 100% load. The one that's not used for rendering is used for the explorer and other programs, but why isn't Maya able to run on it as well? I would love to hear of a fix to this. Thanks.
EDIT: I was just thinking that it work just as good if you could read out the progress from the output window which doesn't seem to be effected by the freeze.

how compelex is your scene..?
Right click my computer --> properties to see the CPU
otherwise, windows+x, then press why to get the same windows open in Windows 8.
The freeze is only happening when I have HQ renders that take more than 5 min (single frame).
hit F6, go to Render>Render Current Frame and click the option square.
Make sure your Verbosity Level is set to "Detailed Messages" under the messages dropdown.
This will allow mental ray to report what its doing in the Output window. This way you can keep track of whats actually going on under the hood.
Thank you, that really helped me a lot
figured out that some of my settings for my IBL caused final gathering to explode into an endless exponentionally growing mountain of calculations.
